1.First I submitted a text about recycling to my 13 year-old
students: it was a reading comprehension including some general
information about recycling as well as a few basic words then collected
in a glossary, which the students were supposed to learn. The text was
divided into paragraphs dealing with the following themes:
- the recycling loop
- how we recycle
- the materials that can be recycled
- the stages of the recycling process
- the advantages of recycling
2. I had them read and analyse the text and then answer two kinds
of questions: 5 questions about the contents and three personal
questions, which aimed at encouraging reflection upon the subject and
their attitude.
3. Then I suggested they should realize an advertisement poster
with the art teacher, sticking on it pictures, materials, drawings,
captions, whatever might make people aware of the importance of saving
the earth by recycling. So we began to work on a slogan: I had them
think of what could make a slogan incisive, apart from shortness, and a
great idea came out: the rhyme.
4. In the end two posters were made, and two rhymed slogans were created and written down, as follows:
DON'T WASTE GLASS MY VILLAGE IS FANTASTIC
RE-USE PAPER 'CAUSE WE RECYCLE PLASTIC
COME ON, JOIN US AND THROW BOTH CANS AND TINS
AND MAKE LIFE BETTER! INTO THE PROPER BINS
5. The photographs of the two posters and the text are attached.
I say hello to all of my Swedish, Portuguese, Spanish, Latvian colleagues and I wish everybody a pleasant holiday in Spain.
